Miskolc separated from Borsod County between 1907 and 1909 and implemented the transformation into a center of trade, culture and intellect and a big city of the region as an independent municipality.

The kuruc epoch
Miskolc played a pivotal role during Rákóczi's War for Independence (1703-1711). Prince Ferenc Rákóczi II set up here his headquarters twice, in 1704 and 1706; accordingly the town became not only an military operations center but also a scene of important decisions.
Age of Dualism
After the military disaster of Mohács won by the Turks (1526), Miskolc fell to double powers. Its role increased, as the town was the scene of events of national significance. The delegates of 13 counties on King Ferdinand's (1526-1564) side held a Diet in 1526 and a (partial) Diet in 1541 in the church built on the Avas Hill.
Glory and decay of the Castle of Diósgyőr
The history of the castle dates back to the beginning of the 1100s, it became a royal property in 1128. In some decades, it was owned by Ernye Bán, and then it was his son, Palatine Stephen’s merit to further construct and finalize the palace with a splendid outside and inside.
Miskolc and Diósgyőr in the Middle Ages
The father of our history-recording, King Béla III's chronicler with no name, Anonymous already mentioned Miskolc and Diósgyőr (thus, the core of the city is thousand years old) by name in his work about the deeds of the Hungarians.
